The Food Chain
I knew when I left the house today I was going to see something interesting. Most were unattainable with the camera though….a Kingfisher sitting on a telephone wire around busy traffic, a Great Blue Heron gently gliding over cars on the interstate. But it was the next image that really got my attention and made me pull the car over to check into more closely. At first all we could see was a sea of black cowering over something in the field. Upon closer inspection with the zoom, I could see what all the fuss was about. Black Vultures were grazing on what was left of a young deer, probably hit by a passing car and wandered off into the field to die.
So many deer are hit by traffic around the bottoms here but even on the busy interstates you have to be careful. It’s always “deer thirty” during the Winter months in the south. I’d prefer to see them safe and sound off in a field somewhere, away from the hazards of traffic.
